Negro Es Bello (Black Is Beautiful)

“Black Is Beautiful” was a signature motto of the Black Panther Party in the 1960’s and 70’s. Elizabeth Catlett uses the expression, which appeared on pins the Panthers distributed at their rallies and demonstrations, as a messaging device on “Negro Es Bello”, which are layered in opposite corners around two black faces, depicted with Catlett’s signature geometric facial features.
